Part 1 : PNEUMONIA

a) Causes and signs of the disease:

  • Pneumonia in goats usually appears between autumn and winter or early spring. Adverse factors of the environment such as low temperature, monsoon, dampness, cramped, un detected barns, goats sticking to rain … increases the incidence of the disease of goats.
  • Sick goats present with high fever, poor appetite, fatigue, moodyness, lying in one place, possible drooling, runny nose, cough and shortness of breath. In cases of severe illness and not timely treatment of goats are prone to death. The disease can turn chronic, the goat is sick, thin and very difficult to recover.

b) How to prevent the disease:


Keep the barn dry, clean, airy in summer and warm in winter. Periodically clean the barn with 10% lime water or 2% phenic acid. Feed the goats well, ensuring adequate nutrition; Food and water should be clean. Early detection of sick goats, isolation and timely treatment.

Treatment of bacterial infections: use of one of the following antibiotics for 4-5 consecutive days: Tylosin, dose of 11mg/kg volume/day; Gentamycin, dose 15mg/kg volume/day; Streptomycin, dose 30mg/kg volume/day; Take vitamin B1, vitamin C; Good care and nurturing

It has been touted as “the Viagra of the Himalayas” and offer medicinal properties comparable to or higher than those in ginseng. The best quality Caterpillar Fungus that grow in the wild can fetch up to USD 50,000 a pound and is outside the financial mean of everyone except royalties and the ultra rich. Much effort has gone into cultivating the Caterpillar fungus in controlled environment. The price is now within the mean of many people but it is still a high value product.
